Split Shifts
Split shifts allow employees to have multiple work periods in a single day, with breaks in between.
What is a Split Shift?
A split shift occurs when an employee works two or more separate periods in one day. For example:
Slot 1: 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM (Morning session)
Break: 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Slot 2: 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM (Evening session)
Setting Up Split Shifts
Create Both Shifts
First, create separate shift definitions for each time block (e.g., "Morning Session" and "Evening Session").
Assign First Shift
Assign the first shift with:
- Shift Type: Split Shift
- Slot Number: 1
Assign Second Shift
Assign the second shift with:
- Shift Type: Split Shift
- Slot Number: 2
Same Effective Dates
Ensure both assignments have the same effective from/until dates.
Shift Types
| Type | Description | Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| Primary | Standard single shift | Regular 9-5 employees |
| Split | Multiple work periods per day | Coaching staff with morning and evening sessions |
| Rotational | Shifts that rotate on schedule | Security staff, range supervisors |
Validation Rules
The system validates that split shift time periods don't overlap. You cannot assign two shifts with overlapping times to the same employee.
Best Practices
- Use descriptive shift names (e.g., "Morning Coaching Session" vs. just "Morning")
- Keep shift definitions active even when not in use - deactivate instead of deleting
- For split shifts, ensure adequate break time between slots
- Review shift assignments periodically and end-date outdated ones
